When President Barack Obama signed an update to U.S. law protecting religious freedom late last week, one provision drew special attention: U.S. law now recognizes non-believers as, in essence, a religious group.

Richard Bowers always were targetable. As a teacher in high school, I couldn’t let other teachers, parents, or admins know I was an atheist. Maybe you think that’s grounds for getting fired, certainly a number of parents–people who might think atheism is unethical– would, but I’m an excellent teacher. It has no relationship to my teaching.
